엘리아데의 종교적 관점으로 본 프로이트의 “문명 속의 불편” : 엘리아데의 자서전과 일기를 중심으로

본 논문은 엘리아데의 자서전과 저널을 중심으로 프로이트의 ‘문명 속의 불편’을 비판적인 입장으로 살펴보면서, 엘리아데와 프로이트 사상의 본질적 가치를 새로운 시각으로 들여다보고자 하였다. 더 나아가 엘리아데의 사상이 단지 본질만을 추구하는 초월적 관념이 아니라, 한 인간의 구체적 삶의 경험에 입각한 인간의 실존적 문제를 해결하기 위한 학문임을 밝혀 보고자 하였다. 엘리아데와 프로이트의 본질적 차이는 삶과 문명에 대한 궁극적인 입장의 차이이다. 프로이트는 인간의 욕동과 무의식에 대한 연구를 통해, 인간의 문명이 초래한 비극적 고통은 에로스의 확장에 의한 공감적 유대로 해결할 수 있으리라고 보았다. 하지만 엘리아데는 일상을 통해 지속적으로 삶을 살아가는 역사적인 존재인 인간에게는 신화적이며 종교학적 관점의 새로운 휴머니즘이 요청된다고 주장한다. 왜냐하면 지금까지 인류가 경험하고 축적한 모든 삶의 지혜가 신화와 상징 그리고 종교적 경험을 통해 면면히 내려오고 있기 때문이다. 앞으로 계속적으로 새로운 역사적 고난을 창조적으로 헤쳐 나가야 할 인간에게 엘리아데의 관점이 더욱 요청된다고 여겨진다.
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to examine Sigmund Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents from the background and intrinsic value of Mircea Eliade’s ideas, focusing on Eliade's autobiography and journals. This work shows that Eliade's approach is not derived from a notion of essentialism that is far from reality, but from an examination of the existential problems of actual human life based on real life experiences and factual data. The crucial difference between Eliade and Freud is the contrast of their decisive attitude about life and civilization. Freud insisted that the tragic pain caused by human civilization could be solved by the empathic ties of expansion of Eros. On the other hand, Eliade argued that a human being, a historical being who lives through his daily life, is demanding a new humanism through a mythical and religious meaning. Eliade's view seems to be more appropriate for the future of mankind because we will be able to overcome creatively any new hardships by regaining symbolic meanings.
