T. S. 엘리엇과 정신분석: 문화, 종교, 문명에 대한 고찰을 중심으로

T. S. 엘리엇은 20세기 시인 중에서도 여타의 시인과 확연하게 구별되는 사상적 체계를 가지고 있었던 시인이었다. 엘리엇의 시학과 사상에 대해서 행해진 기존의 연구는 철학적, 문화적, 종교적, 인류학적, 그리고 심리학적 관점에서 접근한 것들이 상당하다. 엘리엇은 당시의 심리학, 철학, 인류학, 그리고 신비주의와 같은 종교적 사상의 방대한 학문적 배경을 토대로 “자신의 종교적인 신념과 문학적 지표”를 형성하게 된다. 특히 엘리엇과 활동연대가 상당부분 중첩되는 지그문트 프로이트(Sigmund Freud)와의 연관성은, 이 두 사람의 시기적 문화적 중첩성을 고려해 볼 때, 직간접적인 영향이 있었을 것으로 추정된다. 20세기 초부터 현재에 이르기까지 사회, 문화, 예술 다방면에 걸쳐서 영향력이 줄어들지 않고 있는 프로이트의 정신분석학은 여러 가지 측면에서 엘리엇의 사상 및 그의 작품 세계를 조명하는데 많은 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 엘리엇이 문화와, 문명, 그리고 종교에 대해서 매우 깊고 진지한 성찰을 행했던 것처럼, 프로이트 역시 다양한 저술을 통해 인류의 역사와 문명, 종교와 문화에 대한 많은 저작을 남겼다. 이런 점에서 본 논문은 엘리엇과 프로이트의 정신분석학이 인류의 문화, 문명, 종교라고 하는 아주 근원적인 요소에 대해서 각기 어떤 변별적 차이점을 지향하고 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
T. S. Eliot was one of the most distinguished poets of the 20th century. There have been a lot of research about his poetic theory and major works such as The Waste Land, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” and Four Quartets. Most of the research has been done from the perspectives of philosophy, culture, religion, anthropology and psychology. Eliot was able to establish his own “religious faith and literary tenets” with the erudite backgrounds of psychology, philosophy, anthropology, and mysticism. As such, Eliot was at the hub of intercultural dynamics in the modernist era. In particular, considering their overlapped time spans, Eliot and Sigmund Freud might be seen to have had subtle mutual influences whether directly or indirectly. Freud’s influence on contemporary culture is still perceivable in almost every academic discipline and should be deemed helpful in understanding modernist authors such as Eliot. As Eliot profoundly meditated upon culture, civilization and religion, Freud also left a substantial amount of writing on almost the same variety of subjects. In this respect, this study aims to differentiate their perspectives toward culture, civilization and religion.
