Abstract

Social status of females has improved largely thanks to increased educational levels and social participation. However, females still undergo cultural and social barrier in the process of marriage so that they are less likely to marry than before. This hesitation of marriage leads to a delay of marriage and non-married status, and low fertility rates as a result. Therefore, an investigation of gender differences in attitudes toward marriage contains a significant policy implication. Drawing data from the 2009 National Marriage and Fertility Study, this study aims at examining moderating effect on the association between gender and attitudes toward marriage. Findings show that females show a lower with adjustment for family background, socioeconomic status, and marriage value variables, which is similar to previous work. For moderating effects, gaps of attitudes toward marriage between males and females are greater for females who have college degree or are employed. This finding suggests that as a proportion of females with higher social status increases, females feel less inclined to marry.
