초록

Pursuant to the Framework Act on Korean Language, the National Institute of the Korean Language has conducted a quinquennial survey on people’s language awareness since 2005. Regrettably, however, there has been little academic or policy discussion on the results and outcomes of the surveys conducted in 2005 and 2010. With the third survey coming up in less than a year, it is imperative that the findings from the first two surveys be scrutinized for their causes and policy implications. In an attempt to help fill this void, the present study analyzes the results of the 2005 and 2010 surveys and examines how they have been incorporated into language policy making. The study reveals certain shifts and developments in people’s awareness of and attitude toward the Korean language, which should feed not only into the upcoming survey but also into future policy decisions. The study also puts forward some general suggestions on how the survey may be revised and updated so as to facilitate more effective, timely, and relevant fact-finding.
