스토아주의는 다른 헬레니즘 철학에 비해 교의체계가 복잡, 광대한 편이다. 그 이유는 오랜 세월동안 많은 신봉자들에 의해 강조점이 변해왔기 때문이다. 스토아주의의 변천과정을 초기 중기 후기로 나누어, 어떻게 변화했는지 살핀다: 그리스 도시국가 질서가 와해된 후 무의미함이 주류를 이루던 분위기 속에서 평정심을 중시하는 스토아주의가 태동되었다; 로마시대엔 공적 의무를 중시하는 로마인들에 의해 선호, 변용되었다; 그 후 현실세계의 무상함에 피로감을 느낀 로마인들 사이에서 침잠과 극기수련을 강조하는 후기 스토아주의가 대두하였다. 점차 종교적 색채를 띠면서 그 학파는 마침내 기독교에 길을 비켜주었다. 양자 간의 유사점과 차이점을 중심으로 기독교와 스토아주의의 관련성에 대해 살핀다.
Abstract
The Stoicism is less easily comprehended, nor can it be said that its doctrines were always coherent. The main reason is that many of the major teachings of the Stoicism underwent multiple revision with its comparatively long lifespan. This study looks into the change and development of the Stoicism by classifying among three phases, the early, middle, and late Stoics. It is said that Christianity is nothing more than what was already present in the life of the Hellenistic Age. The statement is often made that there is harmony between Stoicism and Christianity because both held to the same kind of conception of God. This study examines the Stoicism’s relationship to the Christianity and investigates that the views of Stoicism and Christianity are by no means identical.
