Abstract

In ancient societies, tombs can be seen as representations of burial rites and an embodiment of a society, reflecting characteristic elements of the society and culture of that time. The task of estimating the hierarchy of these tombs is a starting point to more comprehensively reconstruct the society of that time. Hierarchy is a term used in discussing social systems, generally referring to socially structured inequalities. In the analysis of tomb hierarchy, the typical factors analyzed are the scale and contents of the tombs. This study utilizes archaeological data from the Toeraeri site to examine the nature and hierarchy of the Toeraeri group and to make inferences regarding their social roles within Geumgwang Gaya society. Through an analysis of the size of Toeraeri's tombs and the combination of burial artifacts, an attempt was made to delineate their hierarchical structure, revealing evidence of social stratification within the group. By examining the headman of a tomb, it can be inferred that the Toeraeri group played the role of a specialized group, particularly in metal production, within Gaya society. While they may have been considered a middle-class within the Gaya tomb society, within the Toeraeri group itself, they are believed to have held positions of influence.
