초록

앨리스의 문제점: 양가적 텍스트 번역하기 본 논문의 취지는 번역가가 양면의 가치를 지닌 텍스트를 번역할 때 접하게 되는 어려움을 유형별로 고찰하는 것이다. 본 논문은 이를 위해 폴란드 어로 번역된 이상한 나라의 앨리스 네 편을 다루고 있다. 이상한 나라의 앨리스를 번역하는 것은 특별한 도전이다. 언어학적 풍부함, 복잡성, 예술적 가치라는 텍스트 자체의 특성에다, 어린이 보다는 성인들이 더 많이 감상하는 고전이라는 점 때문이다. 앨리스는 당초 어린이를 위해 쓰인 책이지만 독자층이 어린이 이상으로 확대되고 있다 (필립스, 1972: xxii). 오늘날 앨리스의 독자층은 어린이/ 성인 양쪽을 망라하고 있다. 따라서 앨리스를 특정 목표언어로 번역하려면 독특한 문제점에 봉착하게 된다. 번역상의 주된 어려움은 상상의 세계에서 펼쳐지는 대단한 모험이야기가 제공하는 유머와 흥미를 어린이의 눈높이에 맞춰 번역해야 하고, 동시에 혁신적인 언어의 구사, 언어에 대한 유희, 역설 또는 허무맹랑한 이야기를 가미하는 등 성인의 눈높이도 맞춰야 한다는 것이다. 본 논문은 폴란드의 번역가들이 루이스 캐럴의 소설에 나타나는 이 같은 번역상의 어려움을 얼마나 다른 시각으로 풀어낼 지를 설명할 것이다. 또한 번역가가 취하는 특별한 번역 전략 뿐 아니라, 대상 독자 선택으로 인해 초래된 번역가의 (비)가시성에 대해서도 논증하고자 한다.
