루이스 캐롤의 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』의 프랑스어 번역본에 나타난 난센스 번역의 창작적 면모

이 연구는 난센스 문학의 대표적인 작품인 루이스 캐롤(Lewis Caroll, 1832-1898) 의 『이상한 나라의 앨리스Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)』(1865)의 프랑스어번역본들을 중심으로 난센스 번역의 창조적 면모에 대해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『앨리스』에는 단어의 복수적 의미의 사용, 상이한 구문 속의 단어의 기능의 차이, 단어의 의미와 소리 간의 유희, 문화적 맥락 차이, 언어 규칙의 위반등 언어의 다각적인 측면에서 생기는 다양한 난센스들이 녹아 있다. 원래 문학작품의 번역은 단어 차원의 축자적인 번역에서부터 원 텍스트의 내적 총체성에근간한 새로운 창작까지의 넓은 스펙트럼 사이에서 매 순간 최선의 방안을 모색하는 어려운 작업이지만, 특히 난센스는 원 텍스트 언어의 고유한 복수적 측면에 기인하는 경우가 많고 이러한 복수적 양상을 번역어 차원에 동시에 반영하는것은 매우 어렵기 때문에 난센스 문학의 번역은 그 창조적 면모가 극적으로 부각된다. 『앨리스』의 번역에서도 각 맥락에 따라 난센스의 복수적 면모들을 가장 효과적으로 전달할 수 있는 전략을 선택할 수밖에 없다. 이 연구에서 『앨리스』의프랑스어 번역본 다섯 작품을 중심으로 원 텍스트의 난센스 면모를 번역어 차원에서 새롭게 창안해낸 양상에 주목해보았다. 우리가 살펴본 프랑스어 번역본들에서 원 텍스트의 문체, 추상적 의미를 구체화시키는 과정에서 생기는 난센스, 동음(동형)이의어, 유음(유형)이의어 등 소리와 철자 그리고 의미의 간극에서 생기는 언어유희나 유사 언어 창조 등 원 텍스트의 난센스들을 각 번역자들이 나름대로의 방식으로 프랑스어 방식의 난센스로 새롭게 창안해내고자 시도하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the nonsense aspects in french translations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland(1865) by Lewis Carroll (1832-1898). Among the nonsense elements in the original text, some can be directly translated, while others such as plural meanings of words, function of words in different phrases, phonetic qualities, violation of language rules, etc., are difficult to convey when translated to meaning-oriented. If nonsense is explained separately as a footnote or supplementary explanation of the original text, the original nonsense is faithfully delivered to the reader. However, it has a limit that does not sufficiently capture the interest of the reading dimension of nonsense literature. Therefore the translator can use a translation strategy to convey the effect of nonsense of the original text. We focused on the way in which the translator invented a new nonsense independently in terms of the translation, centering on the five French translations of Alice. In reviewing Alice's five French translations, we found that in many cases, each french translation is trying to overcome the meaning-oriented translation and attempts to create nonsense effects of the translating language corresponding to the nonsense effects of the original text.
