초록

The perspectives of insider and outsider have been an issue in multicultural children’s literature. In this study, seventeen Korean folktales published in the United States were surveyed to examine the authenticity of Korean culture in illustrations. The findings showed that both the insider group and the outsider group portrayed authentic Korean culture. At the same time, inauthentic representations of Korea were found in both groups. No correlation was found between the illustrator’s Korean ethnicity and the ability to illustrate Korean culture authentically. No matter how well illustrations are done, illustrations should not be accepted if they create distorted images of Korea when publishing Korean folktales. Illustrators cannot create the images of Korea with their imagination only. They need to conduct research on Korean culture in order to illustrate authentic Korean traditions, values and beliefs.
