메리 노튼(Mary Norton)(1903-1992)은 『바로우어즈』(The Borrowers) 시리즈를 통해 새로운 내러티브를 실험하고 다양한 주체의 상호작용을 모색하면서 이야기하기란 무엇인지를 탐구하고 있다. 『바로우어즈』 이전까지 대부분의 판타지 아동문학에서는 판타지 세계와 현실 세계가 비교적 뚜렷하게 구분된다. 이에 반해, 현실세계의 인간에 해당하는 거인 휴먼 빈즈(Human Beans)와 이들에게 몰래 생필품을 빌어서 살아가는 작은 사람들 바로우어즈는 한 집 안에 공존하며, 언어 및 일반생활양식을 공유한다. 이 작품은 환상성과 현실성은 객관적 현상이라기보다는 시각의 문제임을 제시한다. 무엇보다 이 작품은 화자는 어른, 청자는 아동이라는 기존의 많은 아동문학작품의 도식을 전복시킨다. 이야기의 구성과 결론은 열려 있으며, 화자와 청자는 상호작용을 통해 함께 이야기를 짜 가는데, 이는 동시에 퀼트짜기라는 노동이자 놀이와 상호작용한다. 한때 청자였던 사람이 화자가 되고, 화자는 다시 청자가 되면서 이야기하기의 과정이 반복되는데, 이는 발터 벤야민이 논의한 전통적인 이야기하기의 속성과 유사하다. 화자와 청자, 어른과 아이, 현실세계와 판타지세계 사이의 부단한 상호작용은 이 작품의 주제인 주인공 아동의 성장과도 연결된다. 이때 성장은, 고통스럽더라도 자기중심적 시각의 오류와 한계를 넘어서서 세상과 자신에 대한 정직하고 보다 깊은 이해에 이르는 것을 의미한다. 이런 개방적 상호관계는 작품 전체를 관통하며, 이야기하기의 본질을 설명하고 있다.
Abstract
In The Borrowers, Mary Norton (1903-1992) examines the essence of storytelling through a new narrative and interactions between diverse subjects. Many fantasy novels before this book showed relatively distinct divisions between the fantasy world and the real world. In contrast, in The Borrowers, Human Beans, human beings in the real world, and Borrowers, ‘fantasy little people’, coexist in the same house, and share the same language and general ways of life. Fantasy and reality are not clear-cut phenomena but are a matter of perspective. Most of all, this book challenges the traditional relationships between adults as storytellers and children as listeners. The plot and the ending are left unclear, and Mrs May and Kate weave a story together, interacting with their quilting activity. The storyteller and the listener continue to exchange their roles. These characteristics embody Walter Benjamin’s concept of a storyteller. The ongoing diverse interactions are thematically linked to the maturing of the child protagonists. They are challenged to face and overcome the fallacies and boundaries of their self-centered perspectives and to reach an honest and deeper understanding of the world and themselves. The idea of interactive openness flows through this story and is an essence of the storytelling.
