Abstract

Children's literature should be translated in consideration of the specificity of the target readers, and its moral and educational effects should not be overlooked. Children's literature is intended for preschool children(age 3-7) and early school-aged children(age 8-10). Previous studies have mainly dealt with the norms and translation strategies applied to both the age groups. However, before school age speakability is more emphasized than readability in the translation, and early school-aged children have more abundant vocabulary and complex sentences than preschool children. Therefore, translation strategies for the two age groups need more detailed discussion. In this study, we assessed the appropriateness of the translation strategies through 『The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip』, which is intended for early school-aged children. Although it is a fairy tale for early school-aged children, it contains many instances of vocabulary beyond the understanding of children of that age, as well as frequent omission of repeated phrases or sentences and division of sentences without considering the intention of the author. This can lead to the loss of interest of the reader or may not reflect the author’s intention properly. As seen in this study, rather than applying uniform norms to the translation of children's literature for both preschool and early school-aged children, establishing translation strategies suitable for each age group can not only attract the children’s attention but also help improve children’s cognition, language, logic and imagination.
