Abstract
Mr. Men series written by Roger Hargreaves are salient bedtime-hour picture books for children. These books have respective special characters in each book. In this study, we will examine what kinds of translation strategies are applied by Korean translators. More often than not, translation strategies of explicit specification or omission were used. According to such translation strategies, unlike the explicit contents of the ST, implicit contents were explicitly written from the intention of the translator, or omitted in TT. In case of considering unnecessary parts for young child readers' understanding, omission strategies were frequently used. However, several examples have shown that translator’s severe negotiation such as paraphrase or omission may distort or interfere with the children’s imagination through cognitive interactions by filling the gaps between words and pictures. Sometimes translation strategies such as paraphrase and omission are appropriate to help children understand the translated texts with pictures. Depending on the age of the target reader, descriptive or omitted expressions may be helpful, but readers who can read stories can fully perform and develop cognitive functions of imagination through visual, contextual and semantic understanding. In addition, the use of vocabulary is sometimes beyond the level of the target audience's understanding; without serious consideration of the ST’s expressive intention, some explanations were frequently found. This could prevent the activation of imaginative cognitive activities accompanied by children's creativity. Therefore, it needs to be taken seriously. As shown in this study, a translation should take the imaginative cognitive activity of target readers into account to further enhance the imagination of the child reader and develop their enjoyment in reading.
