Abstract

This paper is a disability studies-informed analysis of Ko Jeong-Wook’s two children’s stories: A Wheelchair Flies(2006) and A Boy Who Reads for a Disabled Writer(2016). Disability, in each story, functions as a medium by which to remind people of their own vulnerability and dependency in positive ways and to bring about personal and communal demands for alliance-building. In A Wheelchair Flies, Joon Suk, a misfit protagonist with a disability, is socially isolated by medical, scientific discourses and mutual discords between bodies and outside world, but the positiveness and dynamics of misfits themselves leads to transform the world and to create empathy and cooperation among people. In A Boy Who Reads for a Disabled Writer, friendship between a boy without disability and a disabled writer not only results in personal growth but also expands to the communal changes and innovations, by reading together and communicating each other. In conclusion, the implications of research findings are found through deep discussion.
