Discussions on Gando Convention, a treaty signed in 1909 between Japan and China in which Japan received railroad concessions in Manchuria, is still a subject of interest among Korean scholars. This paper, which is primarily based on an article published in a Japanese journal ‘Chosun,’ aims to provide a historical scope during 1907. It was when the controversy on Japan’s effort to extend its influence in Manchuria broke out. It was Japan’s strategy to get closer to mainland China in order to create tensions with Qing China. In turn, it brought worsening dispute that concerns the Korean territory of Gando with the Joseon dynasty, which was then apparently under the Japanese colonial control. Details of how this historical event shaped the perception of scholars also presents the implications of imperial expansion that caused this contentious discourse among historians.
