Abstract
This paper suggests that the May Fourth Movement be understood from regional perspective that emphasizes human (radical) activities in both China and Eastern Asia. If viewed from a regional perspective, the May Fourth Movement, it argues, was a movement that not only diffused after the 'May Fourth Incident' radical ideas and activities from Beijing to other major cities and provinces in China but made articulated and concentrated in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai various radical ideas, concerns, and movements that had long existed already since the early 20th century in many different places in China. Moving away from the conventional teleological interpretation that sees the May Fourth Movement as the turning point in the history of modern China that made history move toward a new era under the ascendency of communism in the radical movement of China (and Eastern Asia), the paper also suggests that it be understood as a pinnacle of transnational radical movements in both China and the region, and, therefore, as part of regional history as well as China's national history. The regional perspective helps us, in other words, understand how and why radical movements with transnational bent in China and Eastern Asia were gradually replaced in mid-1920s by the Leninist communist party and its movement that placed much emphases on national questions (rather than on transnational ones) and solutions to them in the revolutionary movements in colonies and semi-colonies.
