김수영의 시 「눈」의 해석에 대한 연구

김수영은 <눈>이라는 제목의 시를 세편 발표하였다. 1956년, 1961년, 1966년에 각각 발표하였는데, 그 가운데서 1956년에 발표된 <눈>이 가장 널리 알려져 있고, 고등학교 교과서에도 자주 실렸다. 그러나 지금까지 이 작품에 대한 해석이 잘못된 것으로 보인다. 조그만 차이가 있긴 하지만, 지금까지 대부분의 해석들은 공통적으로 눈을 긍정적인 대상으로 파악한다. 젊은 시인의 비판의식을 자극하고 내면을 정화시키는 매체로써, 순결과 정직 등의 의미소를 지니는 것으로 이해되었다. 그러나 눈에 대한 이러한 이해는 눈에 대고 침을 마음껏 뱉자고 하고 심지어 가래도 뱉자고 하는 내용과 모순을 이룬다. 순결한 대상에 대고 기침과 가래를 뱉는 것은 말이 안 되기 때문이다. 이러한 의문점은 이 시에서 눈의 의미를 새로 생각하게 만든다. 그 중요한 계기가 되는 구절이 ‘죽음을 잃어버린 영혼과 육체를 위해서 눈은 살아 있다’이다. 죽음과 영혼을 잃어버린 영혼과 육체는 오만하고 타락하고 부패한 인간이다. 이들을 위해 살아 있는 눈은 그러므로 그들의 거짓과 타락을 깨끗하게 은폐해주는 대상이다. 눈은 이 세상의 모든 더러움까지 하얀 순결함으로 뒤덮어준다는 점을 생각하면 눈이 위선과 은폐의 의미소를 지니는 것으로 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 눈을 이처럼 위선과 거짓으로 파악하면 시의 이해가 한결 명료해진다. 시인은 눈이 녹지 않고 있는 것을 보면서 이 세상에 아직도 많은 위선과 거짓이 저렇게 추악한 진실을 뒤덮고 있다는데 생각이 미치고 이어서 그러한 위선과 거짓에 대해서 젊은 시인은 강하게 비판해야한다고 스스로 다짐하는 것이다. 이것이 <눈>에 대한 바른 이해일 것이다.
Abstract
Kim Soo-young(1921-1968) is one of most important poets in 20c Korean literature. He wrought 3 poems titled 「snow」. The first 「snow」 was published in 1956 and the second in 1961, the third in 1966, that has 5 year term. Among these the first 「snow」 is most well-known and interesting but has not been interpretated pertinently. They said that the figurative meaning of 'snow' is purity and aliveness in the almost existing interpretations. But if so, the interpretation could not have logicality. One of the problems is that purity of snow should not be the target to which dirty phlegm could be spit out. The third stanza says that the snow is alive for the sake of the soul and the body having forgot the death. They do not know the lesson of 'Memento Mori' and are corrupted easily. It is resonable to think that is for the sake of vice is also vice not virtue. Therefore the snow should mean something vicious. The fallen snow cover everything and make the dirty reality invisible. It suppress truth and fact. The meaning of snow in the first 「snow」 is very likely lie and concealment. Interpretating the meaning of snow like this, the whole meaning of the first 「snow」 could be clear and deep ; The poet call to mind the lie and concealment of this world looking over white world coverd by snow. He make his mind to unveil by coughing out and even spit phlegm out. The first 「snow」 is one of Kim Soo-young's masterpieces that show us the spirit of poet resisting vices of the world successfully.
