엔도 슈사쿠의 『 바다와 독약』에 나타난‘바다’와 ‘독약’의 상징성 고찰－스구로 지로(勝呂二郎)를 둘러싼 죽음의 세계와 죄의식 부재를 중심으로－

본 고에서는 작품 『 바다와 독약』 중 제1장 「바다와 독약」을 중심으로 바다와 독약의 상징성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 즉 1장에서 5장까지 시간적으로는 전쟁 시기에 공간적으로는 F시에 살고 있는 주인공 스구로지로를 통해 검은바다는 암울과 죽음의 세계로, 그리고 그 속에 살고 있는 사람들의 죄의식 부재는 독약에 중독된 상태로 상징적으로 묘사하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 현재 도교 외곽에 살고 있는 스구로는 비록 평범한 삶을 살고자 하나 과거와 현재가 치유에 의하여 단절되었다고 하기 보다는 오히려 연속적으로 이어진 결과, 여전히 독약에 중독된 채 절망에 가까운 삶을 살아가고 있다. 이것은 또한, 현재 평범한 삶을 영위하면서 행복을 느끼는 ‘나’야말로 어쩌면 새로운 바다에 살아가면서 새로운 독약에 중독된 채 살아가는 것은 아닌가 라고 하면서 작품을 마무리하고 있는데, 결국 이것은 엔도가 우리들의 평범한 삶 자체가 어쩌면 죄악일지도 모른다는 것을 말하려 함과 동시에 개인의 힘으로는 도저히 시대적 흐름에 저항할 수조차 없다는 인간의 나약함을 표현 한 것이라 하겠다.
Abstract
This is to study symbolism of ‘Sea’ and ‘Poison’ mainly appeared in the first Chapter of Endou’s work, the Sea and Poison. The early chapters from 1 to 5 in this work depicts the dark sea as a world of darkness and death through Suguro’s past lives set in F-city during the war, and the characters in this setting suffers from poison addition caused by the absence of their feeling of guilt. On the other hand, the present Suguro wants to lead a normal life in the suburb around Tokyo, but he cannot escape from the past desperate life, still addicted in poison, because his present life is connected to the past one. As a result, he states about his lives at the end of the novel, mentioning that he now feels happy in a simple life but he still lives with a new poison addiction in a new sea where human’s life itself is a kind of crime and human beings cannot go against the stream of times, which its author Endou tried to show in his novel.
