이중언어사회화가 다문화가정 아동·청소년의 자기존중감에 미치는 영향 -동남아출신 결혼이주여성과 한국인 아버지의 자녀를 중심으로-

초록

다문화가정 이중언어사회화는 한국인 아버지 등 가족이 협력해 외국 출신 어머니 모국어를 자녀에게 전수하고 사용하도록 격려·권장하는 것이다. 본 연구는 1)이중언어사회화, 자녀의 자존감, 부모자녀관계만족도 간의 관계역동을 밝히며, 2)이중언어교육 참여로 자존감의 변화가 있는지 밝히기 위해 수행되었다. 여성가족부의 전국패널조사 데이터를 활용, 전국의 동남아출신 어머니 다문화가족중 만 9〜17세 자녀 436명의 자료를 분석하였다. 또한 경기 성남시 거주 다문화자녀중 한국인 아버지와 베트남, 캄보디아 출신 어머니의 만 6〜14세 자녀 30명을 대상으로 어머니 모국어에 대한 이중언어교육을 6개월간 실시, 교육받은 집단(실험군)과 받지 않은 집단(대조군)간 자존감 변화에 차이가 있는지 확인하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화가정 이중언어사회화는 자녀의 자존감과 부모자녀관계만족도에 각각 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 다문화가정 이중언어사회화는 부모자녀관계만족도를 매개로 자녀의 자존감에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 다문화가정 이중언어사회화는 부모자녀관계만족도와 자존감 사이에 매개효과를 보여 부모가 주도하는 이중언어교육의 중요성이 확인되었다. 넷째, 6개월간 교육받은 집단은 통제집단에 비해 자존감과 부모자녀관계만족도에 유의한 변화가 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과를 종합하면 다문화가정 어머니의 모국어는 단순한 소통수단이 아니며, 문화정체성과 가족응집력의 중요한 매개체이다. 따라서 주류언어 중심의 이중언어교육정책을 어머니 모국어 중심으로 전환하고, 다문화가정내에서 부모 주도의 이중언어교육이 이뤄질 수 있도록 지원하는 방안이 고려되어야 할 것이다.

Abstract

The bilingual socialization for multicultural children is defined as multicultural family members encourage their children to speak the mother tong of married immigrant women who are children’s mothers. The current study investigated 1) the relationship among bilingual socialization, the children’s self-esteem, and their parental relationship satisfaction, and 2) how bilingual socialization or bilingual education affects the self-esteem of the children. Using government’s panel survey data, the data of 436 multicultural children, aged from 9 to 17, born to SE Asian immigrant women was analyzed. And the scientific control has conducted to find changes in the self-esteem after 6 month bilingual education for 30 multicultural children whose mothers are Vietnamese or Cambodian immigrant women. Results are as follows. Bilingual socialization affected high levels of self-esteem as well as higher parental satisfaction. A mediation effect of self-esteem was also found. The experimental group of bilingual education showed higher self-esteem of multicultural children than the control group. The results of this study suggest that the mother tongue of married immigrant women who are children’s mothers is not simply a means of communication but an important mediator of cultural identity and family cohesion. It should be considered to focus on teaching the mother tong and supporting parent-led bilingual education in multicultural families.
