Abstract

This paper examined, based on the work of Hyunggu Lee, the role of the mobility of gaze in the posthuman condition. Hyungkoo Lee is a pioneer of posthuman art in Korea. The mobility of gaze is one of the main methodologies running through his body of work. The mobility of gaze in Hyungkoo Lee's work implies that the direction of the (human) subject's gaze depends on the affect that occurs in the object by chance. In the process of following the affect of matter, he was able to get out of the specific, dichotomous relationship between cause and effect, which is dominated by human reason and will, and arrive at ‘vibrant matter’ where only situational knowledge arises and disappears. Ultimately, the mobility of gaze leads to a movement against human-centered societies that have excluded non-humans, such as animals, plants, organisms, climate systems, technologies or eco-systems. In short, Hyungkoo Lee's work demonstrates the necessity of the mobility of gaze that is true to affect in order to reach a symmetrical relationship between humans and non-humans beyond the conventional systems built around human activities. This paper is significant in that it has provided an opportunity to discuss how the mobility of gaze in Hyungkoo Lee's work works as a condition for posthuman pertaining to the process of seeking the coexistence of humans and non-humans.
