Abstract

This paper aims to examine two paintings which represent the ideal urban communities and is produced in western medieval urban societies characterized by the movement of commune. The one is the <Allegory of Good and Bad Government> of Ambrogio Lorenzetti, fresco panels painted in the Salla Dei Nove of the City Hall of Siena in first half of the 14th Century. And the other is the <Festival of the Archers> of 'Master of Frankfurt', painter of Antwerp at the end of the 15th Century. The work of Ambrogio Lorenzetti describes a transition from the <Bad Government> to the <Good Government> as not symmetrical structure but narrative organization and emphasizes the political legitimacy of the Government of 'the Council of Nine'. The contemporary sienese political regime represented by him was a political system trying to encompass a popular political agreements to the fullest, despite its oligarchical form, generally accepted in medieval italian city-states. The city of Siena is characterized by Diversity and Concord of citizens, members of the urban community and by the governmental publicness. Lorenzetti's work confirms that the urban community which assures diversity in spite of its complexity contrary to the monarchical system can bring peace and prosperity. The next thing is <Festival of the Archers> of 'Master of Frankfurt' which represents a social hierarchy of Antwerp around the duke of Burgundy, but at the same time which disposes pictorial elements of violation and subversion against this hierarcy. In combining the 'Cocagne', rural utopia and the City, metaphor of Christian civilization, this work criticize severely the power of prince and the big capitals, dominators of Antwerp. In spite of difference of the rhetorical tactics, these two works are very similar in that they show same desires and visions on the urban community of painter and their commander: securing the equivalent rights among members of urban communities and obtaining the liberty of the urban community against the external Powers. These are preconditions for real prosperity and peace of urban community. These views are connected with various problems of Today's urban community: demand on the 'egaliberté' of the excluded from the right to the Polity(E. Balibar), appropriation of the abstract cause of Polity between the Politics and the Police(J. Rancière), and opennes and colsure of Polity(community and immunity of R. Esposito). The subjects of hhese two untimely works resonate with the problems of today's urban community.
