Abstract
Destructing a general historical perspective in which we tend to consider the establishment of trade unions as results of the Industrial Revolution, and refusing a narrow view that the working class culture in first industrial societies has been dominated only by effects of the “dual revolution”, this article examines the origin of french Trade unions organization form over the long term. In the perspective of dual revolution, the industrialization relate to the urbanization leads to the invention of Trade unions and this point of view is largely accepted. But this article suggest paying attention to existing relation between modern Trade unions and Corporations. Thus, we have to note that the culture of corporations lasted in french society even after the French Revolution which abolished them, and dominated workers life in many aspects throughout the nineteenth century and in the beginning of the twentieth century. So, the simplified schema - industrialization-urbanization-emerge of Trade unionism - must be revised to understand the origin of organization form of Trade unions, and a new way of comprehension is demanded: Medieval city-Guilds-Craft unions. In this perspective, this article analyses not only Mutual benefit associations under the Le Chapeler law and Napoleon III’s policy for them, but also the early days of the CGT dominated by craft unions at the moment of its foundation in 1895. In this way, we can observer the competition between the tradition of Corporations and the necessity of local solidarity organized in the industrialized urban zone.
