Abstract
Cities exert a significant influence on the climate crisis, to the extent that they may be regarded as the ‘fossils’ of the Anthropocene. Consequently, the Anthropocene is sometimes referred to as the Urbicene. Within this context, urban spaces often constitute sites of profound injustice for non-human species. Although non-human animals coexist with humans both within and beyond urban boundaries, they have traditionally been excluded from considerations of justice in terms of distribution, status, political representation, and cognitive justice within existing theoretical frameworks. Thus, the establishment of multispecies justice is essential for the development of multispecies cities. In this regard, Martha Nussbaum’s ‘animal justice in a multispecies community’ and Donna Haraway’s ‘multispecies justice in terrapolis’ offer critical insights into formulating multispecies justice as a foundational principle for multispecies urban spaces. Nussbaum, within the framework of liberal philosophy, proposes legal solutions - such as a virtual constitution for animals - demonstrating a humanist extension of multispecies justice. In contrast, Haraway, situated within ecological political discourse, introduces science-artistic practices through the concept of becoming-with companion species, thereby advancing a post-humanist approach to justice. Despite their theoretical differences and the resulting divergence in practical approaches, both scholars provide essential conceptual scaffolding for envisioning multispecies justice in the context of multispecies cities.
