우리나라 기업 특성별 성장성 및 고용역량 분석

Analysis on Firm Growth and Employment Capability across a Firm’s Characteristics

초록

본 연구는 통계청의 『기업활동조사』 기초자료(raw data)를 이용하여 2010-2015년 기간 중 우리나라 기업의 특성별로 기업의 성장성이나 고용역량 등이 어떻게 다른지 실증 분석한 것이다. 분석 결과 다음과 같은 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 기업의 성장성과 관련해서는 매출액 규모가 작은 기업일수록 성장률이 오히려 더 큰 경향이 있음을 알 수 있었으며 투자에 적극적인 기업일수록 매출액으로 측정된 기업의 성장률도 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 한편 다른 조건이 일정하다면 상대적으로 1인당 R&D 비중이 높거나 상용직 비중이 높은 기업일수록 매출액 성장률도 높다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 기업의 고용창출 역량과 관련해서는 성장성이 높은 기업이 고용 증가율도 크다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 실증분석 결과 매출액이 1% 증가할 때 기업의 종사자수는 대략 0.7% 가량 증가하는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 효과는 기업의 규모에 따라서 다소 차이가 있는데 대체로 기업의 규모가 작을수록 기업의 성장에 따른 고용증가 효과도 더 크고 분명한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기업 투자가 많은 기업일수록 고용도 확대되는 경향이 있음을 확인할 수 있었는데 특히 기업의 투자가 고용 확대에 미치는 효과는 제조업의 경우 서비스업에 비해 대략 2배 정도 더 큰 것으로 확인되었다. 이와 같은 분석 결과는 기업을 통한 우리나라 경제의 고용창출 역량 증대를 위해서는 무엇보다도 기업의 성장성 증대와 투자 확대가 필요하다는 점을 시사한다고 볼 수 있다.

Abstract

This study delves into analysis on the growth effects of firms, focusing on the characteristics of heterogeneous firms. The study investigates empirically how much firm’s growth of sales and employment can be differentiated by the firm’s characteristics such as its size, industry, investment, R&D, etc. To this end, a firm-level panel dataset of the period 2010-2015 are compiled based upon the『Report on the Survey of Business Activities』(Statistics Korea) database in which more than ten thousands firms for each year from both manufacture and service sectors. The empirical analyses find the following facts. First, contrary to Gibrat’s law, the smaller firms tend to grow faster when we measure the firm size as its volume of sales. Also, the empirical analyses reveal that the firm’s sales growth rates tend to be higher for the firms of relatively larger investment, higher R&D intensity, and higher full-employed workers ratio. Second, the faster growing firms tend to show higher increasing rates of employment. Based on the empirical analyses, it is found that a firm’s employment increases about 0.7% when the firm’s sales are increased by 1%. This employment growth effect seems to be relatively greater in the smaller firms. Also, the firm’s employment growth rates is higher for the firms of larger investment, and this effect is about two times greater in the manufacturing sector compared with service sector. The policy implication drawn from the overall analyses is that the authorities should pay more attention on the enhancement of firm dynamics with which small and midium-sized firms having ideas can lead to growth and a plentiful job creation.
