우리나라 기업 특성별 성장성 및 고용창출 효과 분석

초록

본고에서는 KIS-VALUE를 통해 입수한 2015년 현재 외감법인으로 등록되어 있는 약 2만여 개의 비금융 기업에 대한 미시 자료를 이용하여 기업의 성장성과 고용창출 역량이 기업의 규모나 업력(나이) 등 기업이 지닌 특성에 따라 어떠한 차이가 있는지 실증적으로 분석해 보았다. 최근 15년(2000∼2014년)의 기간을 대상으로 한 본고에서의 실증 분석은 크게 다음과 같은 두 가지 방향에서 시도되었다. 먼저 우리나라 기업들을 업종별 및 기업의 규모나 업력 등에 따라 구분하고, 각 그룹별로 자본심화의 정도나 생산성 향상 정도, 또는 고용창출 역량 등에 있어 어떠한 특성이 있는지 살펴보았다. 다음으로는 업종별로 기업의 규모나 업력 등이 해당 기업의 성장이나 고용창출 역량에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지와 관련하여 Gibrat 법칙 및 Jovanovic 가설을 중심으로 검증해 보았다. 분석 결과, 우리나라의 경우 대체로 규모가 작고 업력이 짧은 기업이 상대적으로 더 높은 성장성과 고용창출 역량을 지니고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 다만 우리나라 기업들의 전반적인 고용창출 역량은 2000년대 초․중반에 비하여 2000년대 후반 이후 현저히 약화되고 있으며, 이러한 경향이 주로 규모가 작고 업력이 짧은 기업군에서 더 분명하게 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 분석 결과는 우리 경제의 지속적인 성장과 고용창출 역량 증대를 위해서는 상대적으로 규모가 작고 업력이 짧은 기업들의 성장성과 고용창출 능력이 충분히 발휘될 수 있도록 향후 기업의 역동성 제고에 정책적 노력이 보다 집중될 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

Abstract

This paper investigates how much firm’s growth and job creation can be differentiated by the firm’s characteristics such as its size and age. To this end, a firm-level panel dataset between 2000 and 2014 are compiled based upon the KIS-VALUE database in which more than twenty thousands firms from both manufacture and service industry are included due to holding a status of external audit as of 2015. The empirical analyses using 15 years’ data are conducted through two complementary approaches: first, whether the variability in enhancement of productivity, degree of capital deepening, and capability of job creation are substantially different across corresponding firm’s groups categorized by its industry, size and age respectively; secondly. the Gibrat’s law and Jovanovic hypothesis are revisited with a specific focus on how much the size and the age in firm can have effects on its growth and capability of job creation. Estimation results overall indicate that the younger firms with relatively small size in their initial step exhibit higher growth and better performance in job creation in later. Further analysis, however, implies that the average capability in job creation has diminished conspicuously since the later 2000s when compared to that in early and mid 2000s. Moreover this trend has been more significant in the young and small-sized firms. The policy implication drawn from the overall analyses is that the authorities should pay more attention on the enhancement of firm dynamics with which young and small and midium- sized firms having ideas can lead to fast growth and a plentiful job creation.
