Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of Korea's economic growth from 1981 to 2019 on the Ecological Footprint (EF). To achieve this main purpose, this study consists of economic growth, energy consumption, urbanization, and capital formation as the impacts on the Ecological Footprint. In particular, based on the EKC (environmental Kuznets curve) hypothesis, the study used linear and nonlinear models of the Ecological Footprint according to GDP through OLS (ordinary least square), Ridge regression, and QR (quantile regression) analyses. The main analysis results are as follows. First, the effects of economic growth and energy consumption on the Ecological Footprint were conflicting. Second, the nonlinear model showed that the relationship between GDP and the Ecological Footprint was inverted N-shaped, and capital formation had a negative effect on the Ecological Footprint. Third, the analysis of the sensitivity of the Ecological Footprint to GDP changes showed that the Ecological Footprint decreased with economic growth when environmental pollution was relatively low. Through this, it was suggested that in order to have a positive impact on the environment, policies related to Korea's economic growth should be accompanied by policies that reduce energy consumption on the demand side. In addition, if policies that can reduce environmental pollution are actively promoted, the effect of reducing environmental pollution due to economic growth can occur.
