국내 대학 교육의 국제화와 외국인 유학생의 학습 능력 향상을 위한 수업 운영 방안 연구

Abstract

This paper analyzes how universities in Korea respond to the open education market after they have introduced globalization policies, how these policies have been developed, and what problems have been raising under these circumstances. Following the "Study Korea Project" promoted by the government, Korean universities began to establish internationalization policies in order to attract talented international students and to strengthen their education and research capabilities. Implementing such policies, the universities have been also seeking to overcome the difficulties in education financing due to the popularization of tertiary education and the decreasing number of new students. As a result, Korean universities are attracting international students competitively. However, the indiscriminate quantitative growth of international student enrolments is causing unsatisfactory situations for both the professor and the learner at Korean universities. Above all, there is a serious concern about the lack of academic ability of international students in classes. Considering these problems, this paper explores ways to enhance the international students‘ understanding on learning contents. It shows methods to strengthen student engagement in the classroom by enhancing discussion and presentation ability, and it suggests efficient teaching design methods to improve their academic communication skills. In addition, by analyzing cases where the suggested approaches have been applied in class, this paper examines their practical and expected effects. The attracting of international students may be an inevitable requirement in terms of improving national competitiveness and securing independent education finance for universities. If so, it is time for Korean universities to not only recruit international students but also provide higher quality courses that match their learning ability. In addition, the universities should focus on strengthening the educational environment that can truly lead to the internationalization of higher education by listening to various voices in the field.
