한국근대양명학에 관한 연구 현황과 전망

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to collect, arrange and analyze achievements in research on Early modern Yangming studies carried out in the last 60 years, and based on that seek problems as well as prospects of the research on the Early modern Yangming studies in Korea. Some typical scholars of Early modern Korean Yangming studies are Lee Geon Chang (李建昌, 1852~1898), Park Eun Sik (朴殷植, 1859~1925) and Jeong In Bo (鄭寅普, 1892~?), etc. At first, the achievements in research on their thoughts in the last 60 years can be seen in the following table. About the results of research on Lee Geon Chang, “Lee Geon Chang Completed works” (李建昌全集) are published in 1987, and the translation of “General discussion on political factions” (黨議通略) comes to 7 volumes. In addition, there are many research results concerning Lee Geon Chang’s literary career such as the book “Research on Lee Geon Chang’s literary career” by Lee Hee Mok (2005), 8 PhD. and Master’s theses, and 25 research papers. However, in philosophical or historical field, there are only some research papers such as “The study of mind of Yeong-jae Lee Geon Chang” by Song Seok Jun. Research on the study of mind of Lee Geon Chang based on the thoughts expressed in his literary works, along with the research indicating historical significances of his thoughts, can be seen as encouraging tendencies. It is obvious that the research on Park Eun Sik occupies the largest quantity and is the most profound in quality. After the publication and interpretation of “Park Eun Sik completed works” (1975), “Authentic records of Wang Yangming” (2010) and “Authentic records of Master Wang Yangming (interpreted in Korean language)” (2011) are published. There are 15 translation works including 7 volumes of the translation of “A bitter history of Korea”, and there are also 7 books including Shin Yong Ha’s “Research on social thought of Park Eun Sik”. With 9 PhD. theses, 54 Master’s theses and 165 research papers until now, it can be said that the research is carried out generally and impartially. And the research is not limited in any field but covers various ones such as history, philosophy, political thought, pedagogy, sociology etc. As we can see in recent papers of Park Jeong Shim, Kim Hyeon Woo, Lee Hye Gyeong etc, the meaningful point that those papers clarify is that although relying on the Early modern Yangming studies in general, Park Eun Sik’s thought has creative characteristics different from Chinese or Japanese Yangming studies. The research results concerning Jeong In Bo is actually insufficient in comparison with ones of Park Eun Sik. For instance, about his works, there are only “Dam-won’s manuscripts in national language” (薝園國學散藁) (1955), “Dam-won Jeong In Bo completed works” (薝園鄭寅普全集) (1983), and “Interpretations on Yangming studies” (陽明學演論) (1972) that are published. About the publication, there is only “Critical biography of Wi-dang Jeong In Bo: spirit of Jo-seon”, a book by Kim Sam Woong. About the translations, there are “Writings and records of Dam-won” (2006) and “Research on Jo-seon history” (2013). And there is still lack of works and PhD theses which clarify profoundly the entire image of the Yangming studies of Jeong In Bo. However, number of researchers on Jeong In Bo, focussing on literature and history in the early stage and philosophy recently, increases considerably. Moreover, if the Yangming studies of Jeong In Bo have been previously considered based on the democratic stance only, the recent research is also extended to the comparison with the Early modern Yangming studies in Japan or China, and it can be seen as a new characteristic in the research on Jeong In Bo’s thoughts. About the problems concerning the research on the Early modern Korean Yangming studies, it can be said as follows. Firstly, it is necessary to focus on the philosophy of the thinkers of Early modern Korean Yangming studies. Secondly, it is necessary to clarify the influences of and differences from Chinese and Japanese Yangming studies in Park Eun Sik and Jeong In Bo’s thoughts. Thirdly, it is necessary to seek for the possibility for interacting with the modern times and resolving modern problems of the Early modern Korean Yangming studies.
