초록

This paper focuses on how learners of Korean at the high-intermediate and advanced levels construct identities and manipulate “symbolic competence” (Kramsch and Whiteside, 2008) as language learners and users. The paper draws on Marshall Berman's (1982) discussion of change and insecurity in modernity to define “multiculturalization” as modernity induced contact among languages and cultures. The process of multiculturalization has changed the face of Korean language education by creating new ever diverse groups of learners. To investigate these issues, a series of 30-minute open-ended interviews with 16 learners was conducted in the later half of 2009. Related to identity and language use, the interviews shed light on how learners interact with native and non-native speakers, both in private and classroom discourse. These findings in turn raise a number of research questions regarding the role of discourse among non-native speakers in acquisition of Korean, learner views of native and non-native teachers of Korean, and, more broadly, creation and negotiation of identity as non-native speakers of Korean.
