본고의 목적은 『논형』에 보이는 왕충의 교육사상을 분석하는 것이다. 왕충은 인간의 본성이 태어날 때 이미 결정된다고 논했지만, 악인으로 태어났더라도 교육을 통해 선인이 될 수 있다고 주장하였다. 왕충은 당대 축적된 사회적 폐단과 부패의 해결책으로 관료와 지식인의 역량 개선에 집중하였다. 문관을 비판하면서 현실사회의 폐단을 드러내었고, 이상적인 인간상으로 ‘홍유’를 제시하면서 교육의 목표와 그 효과를 기대하였다. 또한 교육으로써 인도할 수 있는 인간의 범위를 제한하지 않았으며, 누구나 배우고 노력하는 것을 통해 성현의 경지에 도달할 수 있는 잠재적 가능성을 가졌다고 여겼다. 이를 통해 국가사회의 제도와 체계까지도 개선할 수 있다는 관점을 가지고 있었다. 왕충의 교육에 대한 논의의 중점은 본성이 악한 사람일지라도 교육을 통해 선해질 수 있다는 교화에 집중한 것이며, 혼란한 사회를 비판하여 더 나은 세상을 만들어 갈 수 있다는 가치관을 제시한 것이다. 결국 왕충의 교육관을 다음과 같이 규명할 수 있다. 지식인인 왕충은 당대의 사회적 문제에 어떻게 대답해야 하는지에 대한 문제점을 명확하게 지적한 것이다. 악인일지라도 지식인의 교육을 통해 개선될 수 있다는 점, 교육이 국가사회와 정치적 폐단을 해결해 줄 것이라는 믿음에서 제기된 것이다. 즉 사회를 변혁하는 과제를 교육이라는 답으로 제시한 것이며 규범을 세웠다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze Wang Chung's view of education in the Lunheng (論衡). Wang Chong argued that human nature is already determined at birth, but he argued that even if a person is born evil, he can become a good person through education. Wang Chong focused on improving the capabilities of bureaucrats and intellectuals as a solution to the problems and corruption of society accumulated in that era. by criticizing civil servants, he exposed the absurd and evil customs of real society, and by presenting ‘Hongyu (鴻儒)’ as an ideal human being, he anticipated the goals and effects of education. In addition, he did not limit the scope of human beings who could be led and changed by education. Everyone had the potential to reach the realm of a holy and wise person through learning and trying. Through this, he had the view that the institutions and systems of the national society could be improved. The focus of Wang Chong's discussion on education is on the teaching that even people with evil nature can become good through education, and he presents the value of criticizing a chaotic society and creating a better world. In the end, Wang Chung's view of education can be identified as follows. Wang Chung, who was an intellectual, clearly pointed out the problem of how to answer the social problems of the time. It was raised based on the belief that even evil people can be improved through education by intellectuals, and that education will solve the absurd evil practices of the national society and political society. In other words, it presented the task of transforming society as the answer to education. It can also be said that it established norms.
