Abstract

This study examines how Dasan Jeong Yak-yong (1762–1836) employed the term Gyeokmul (格物) both within and beyond the context of Classical Learning, and explores the intellectual-historical significance of his understanding of the concept of investigation of things within the disruption of the tradition of investigation of things observed in late Joseon. Within Jeong Yak-yong’s writings, the term Gyeokmul was used both inside and outside the Classical Learning, which may be regarded as the core of his scholarship. In the context of Classical Learning, the term Gyeokmul is understood as laying the foundation for inner moral cultivation by examining both fundamental principles and particulars, in order to connect the virtues of filial piety, brotherly respect, and compassion to concrete realms such as the individual and society. Outside the framework of Classical Learning, however, Gyeokmul was associated with the orthodox Neo-Confucian methodology of “investigation of things” established by Zhu Xi, which had been abandoned by Jeong Yak-yong. Yet, in substance, it was closer to a methodology of statecraft, which, through the medium of objects investigated, aimed to provide the driving force for ordering the family, governing the state, and bringing tranquility to all under heaven. Jeong Yak-yong’s varied uses of Gyeokmul - which in some contexts seem to break from Zhu Xi’s framework of “investigation of things,” while in others still recognize its value - may at first appear to diverge into two separate traditions : a “Gyeokmul under the Context of Classical Learning” and a “Gyeokmul under the Context of Statecraft Learning,” or a “Gyeokmul for Self-cultivation” and a “Gyeokmul for Governing Others.” Jeong’s Classical Learning and Statecraft Learning and the Confucian ideals of Self-cultivation and Governing Others, however, can never be fundamentally severed from one another. His Statecraft Learning was established on the basis of Classical Learning, and, as the chapters of the Great Learning demonstrate, Governing Others cannot be achieved without the foundation of Self-cultivation. Jeong Yak-yong’s use of the term Gyeokmul, both within and beyond the context of Classical Learning, each in a manner suited to its respective context, was ultimately intended to realize the Confucian ideal of Self-Cultivation and Governing Others through a method that had long occupied a central position as one of Confucianism’s principal scholarly approaches.
