Abstract

Park Dal-seong, who was born in Taecheon-gun, North Pyongan Province on April 9, 1895, was a ferven Cheondogyo believer from an early age. It was during the March 1st Movement in 1919 that he participated in the national movement and he followed Son Byeong-hee and participated in important missions. In the same year, he founded Gaebyeoksa with Lee Don-hwa and others, and gave lectures across the country to Taecheon, Iksan, and Gimje. Afterwards, Park Dal-seong went to Japan to study in 1920 and participated in the establishment of the Tokyo branch of the Cheondogyo Youth Association. In Japan, he was imprisoned for his involvement in Yang Geun-hwan's case, and after being released from prison, he entered Dongyang University. During vacation, he went on a lecture tour across Joseon with the Tokyo branch of Cheondogyo, but due to Japanese oppression, the lectures were stopped and Park Dal-seong was imprisoned. In September 1922, ꡔWomenꡕ was changed to ꡔNew Womanꡕ, and Park Dal-seong became the publisher. However, in 1925, the magazine ꡔGaebyeokꡕ was suspended by the Japanese, and in 1926, he was imprisoned again for his involvement in the Korean Independence Movement and suffered severe torture. Meanwhile, Park Dal-seong, along with Lee Don-hwa and others, formed the Cheondogyo New Group, which later degenerated into self-governance theory. It appears that he had a reserved position on the theory of self-government, or at least tolerated it. However, when Choi Rin, Lee Don-hwa and others were leaning toward autonomy, Park Dal-seong's failure to oppose them or advocate a strong independence path remains a stain on his national movement career. He devoted himself to the work of Gaebyeoksa, including organizing the Gaebyeoksa Expansion Association, but in the end, ꡔGaebyeokꡕ was closed down by the Japanese at the end of the 72nd (August) issue on August 1, 1926. Park Dal-seong's failure to oppose Choi Rin, Lee Don-hwa, and others who were close to him when they leaned toward autonomy or to advocate for a strong independence line remains regrettable in his national movement career. After the closure of "Gaebyeok," Park Dal-seong opened a tobacco shop and other pastimes before passing away from illness on May 9, 1934. From the perspective of a young person, he was a person who resonated with his generation and dreamed of social change. Therefore, Park Dal-seong summoned young people as subject of social change. He believed that the development of the nation, society, and people could be achieved through education, and he dreamed of a community where the elite and the people, the Proletariat and the wealthy harmonize and cooperate with each other. As assessed by the Japanese, Park Dal-seong was a young man who resisted social contradictions and the cruel rule of the Japanese through various writings and social activities.
