Abstract
This study focuses on the inscription of a silver bracelet belonging to the queen, which was excavated from King Muryeongs Tomb, and analyzes it from a linguistic perspective. It also offers a reinterpretation of the Land Purchase Record of King Muryeong. First, it examines the writing format of the queens bracelet inscription. A comparative analysis with Chinese examples reveals that the inscription is not written in baekje idu (百济吏读), but in standard literary Chinese (正格汉文). Second, the interpretation of the phrase “tu wang, tu bo, tu fumu, tu xia zhongguan erqianshi” (土王,土伯,土父母,土下衆官二千石) in King Muryeongs Land Purchase Record should be reconsidered. The phrase “tu xia zhongguan erqianshi” (土下衆官二千石) should be divided into “tu xia zhongguan” (土下衆官) and “erqianshi” (二千石). Accordingly, the entire sentence may be more appropriately interpreted as: “tu wang (土王), tu bo (土伯), tu fumu (土父母), the deities of the underworld, and erqianshi (二千石).”
