Abstract
This study was undertaken to examine relationships among blood pressure and anthropometric, and biochemical values in 119 adult males aged 40-60 years. The subjects were classified into three groups of normotensive, pre-hypertensive and hypertensive according to the Joint National Committee(JNC)-7 criteria. The mean blood pressure were 104.5 ± 5.9/67.3 ± 5.0 mmHg, 125.2 ± 5.1/77.5 ± 7.1 mmHg and 143.5 ± 8.9/90.2 ± 7.3 mmHg among normotensive group, pre-hypertensive group and hypertensive group, respectively. The body mass index(BMI) and waist-hip ratio(WHR) were significantly higher in hypertensive group than normotensive and pre-hypertensive groups. The levels of hemoglobin, and serum albumin, glucose, alanine transferase(ALT), aldosterone were significantly higher in hypertensive group than normotensive and pre- hypertensive groups. The serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein B(Apo B), Na and atherogenic index(AI) were significantly higher in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive groups than normotensive group. The serum triglyceride(TG) level was significantly higher and the plasma ascorbic acid(AA) level was significantly lower, according to the blood pressure. In the normotensive group, BMI and WHR were positively correlated with serum TG, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and Apo B levels, Apo B/Apo A1 and AI. In the pre-hypertensive group, BMI was negatively correlated with serum Apo A1 and plasma AA levels. In the hypertensive group, BMI was positively correlated with serum TG level, and WHR was positively correlated with serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels. The AA level was positively correlated with HDL-cholesterol and Apo A1 levels, and negatively correlated with Apo B/Apo A1 and AI in the normotensive and hypertensive groups. These results suggest that maintaining ideal weight, and decreasing serum lipid and Na levels, and increasing plasma AA level in order to prevent hypertension are crucial.
