Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of bark extracts of medicinal herb on rumenfermentation, microbial growth and methane emission. The extracts of bark extracts of medicinalherb, as rose of sharon, castor aralia, chinese hackberry, hardy rubber tree and the silvermagnolia were used in this study. The 20 mL of mixture, comparing McDougall’s buffer andrumen fluid in the ratio 2 to 1, was dispensed anaerobically 50mL serum bottles containing0.3g of timothy substrate and extracts of bark extracts of medicinal herb. The serum bottleswere incubated 39℃ for 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. Supplementation of the bark extractsof medicinal herb extracts did not affect the fermentation characteristics(pH, dry matterdigestibility, ammonia concentration, rumen microbial growth), but not effect of reducing themethane. Acetate concentration was lower(p<0.05) for hardy rubber tree compared with control. Carbon dioxide production as a substrate for methane production in the rumen was lower (p<0.05) for hardy rubber tree compared with control whereas methane reduction effect did notexist. Methanogenic archaea diversity decreased in the rose of Sharon extract treatmentcompared with control whereas methane production was no differences between treatments. Therefore, further detail study may need to investigate of dose level dependence of the extracts, considering the flavonoid concentration of the extracts on the reduction of methane productionand methanogenic archaea.
