Abstract

We compared and analyzed sulfur mulching, commonly used in blueberry cultivation, with pine cone husks, a forest byproduct used in blueberry farms. This research evaluated growth parameters (height, leaf width, and length), physiological characteristics (chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence), leaf nutrient status, and soil chemical properties (nitrogen, potassium, calcium, pH, and organic matter) of blueberries following the application of five treatments: no treatment (control), pine cone husks, pine cone husks with sulfur, sulfur only, and pine needles. Blueberries showed significant differences in growth and development depending on the mulching treatments. Plants subjected to mulching treatments exhibited superior growth compared to those without mulching. The pine cone husks and sulfur mulching treatment increased shoot height by 2.9 times and leaf length by 1.2 times compared to the control group. Chlorophyll content also increased, with organic mulches like pine cone husks and pine needles demonstrating excellent effects on the physiological characteristics and growth of blueberries. The combined treatment of pine cone husks and sulfur proved more effective in enhancing the physiological condition of the blueberries than pine cone husks alone. These results suggest that using pine cone husks and sulfur mulching can improve the physiological condition of blueberries, leading to enhanced growth, physiological characteristics, and soil chemistry, all of which can positively impact blueberry cultivation. In the future, a long-term observation study will be conducted to evaluate the effects of pine cone husks and mulching on blueberry fruit quality.
