Abstract

There are two types of absolute clauses in Spanish. One has the form [XP-DP], in which DP functions as the subject of the predicate XP, and the other one has the form [con-DP-XP]. The main purpose of this paper is to identify the syntactic category of 'con' of the second form. In the literature most previous studies on absolute clauses have focused mainly on the internal structure of the form [XP-DP] and have paid little attention to the issue of what the syntactic category of 'con' of the second form is. Most researchers have just treated it as a preposition. However, the fact that 'con' of the second form does not show the typical meanings of the preposition 'con' such as 'comitative', 'associative' or 'instrumental' makes us wonder if it is a preposition. Thus, I attempt to study the possibility that it belongs to a syntactic category other than prepositions. I claim that it is better to analyse it as a prepositional complementizer and provide some discussions to support my argument. Finally, I try to answer a problem that may be raised when we analyze 'con' as a complementizer. The qu-movement of the subject out of the 'con'-absolute clauses triggers the so called 'comp-trace' effect. I claim that this effect is closely related to the fact that only the order in which the subject precedes the predicate is allowed in 'con'-absolute clauses. Therefore, the movement of the subject out of the 'con'-absolute clauses has to take place immediately behind the complementizer 'con' and, as a result, violates the 'comp-trace filter'.
