Abstract

This study explores the sustainability of NGO-model fact-checking organizations in Latin America by analyzing their operational characteristics and financial structures. The rapid evolution of the media ecosystem driven by Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies has accelerated the spread of disinformation, making fact-checking journalism a crucial democratic safeguard for restoring trust in digital public spheres. Unlike the United States and Europe—where newsroom-based fact-checking models predominate—Latin America has witnessed the emergence of independent and civil society–driven fact-checking organizations that have developed diverse strategies for financial sustainability. This study explored the funding structures of fact-checking organizations such as Argentina's Chequeado and Colombia's Colombiacheck from a sustainability perspective. It confirmed that Latin American fact-checking organizations are securing sustainability by expanding diverse revenue models, including education, consulting, content sales, and international cooperation projects. Moreover, regional cooperative networks such as LATAMChequea, Reverso, and Comprova demonstrate the significance of cross-institutional collaboration in combating misinformation. The findings also highlight media literacy initiatives as a key component supporting citizen participation and enhancing the long-term impact of fact-checking efforts. This study reveals critical factors contributing to the sustainability of NGO-based fact-checking institutions and offers policy implications for strengthening future fact-checking initiatives in Korea.
