Abstract

This study evaluates the quality of fact-checking news articles about the COVID-19 pandemic. By reviewing quality assessment criteria in science journalism and fact-checking, the study proposes quality evaluation standards for each stage of the COVID-19-related fact-checking process. Based on the criteria, a total of 461 fact-checking articles, published over a period of two years and eight months beginning in 2020, were systematically analyzed. The results indicate that while many articles verify objective facts, transparency remains a concern. Notably, some articles fail to disclose original source information or rely heavily on anonymous sources. Although most articles present firsthand evidence, the level of source expertise could be enhanced. While background and contextual information are generally well-articulated, visual materials frequently lack relevance or fail to enhance reader understanding. Fact-checking articles tend to employ less sensational or discriminatory language than general COVID-19 news coverage, yet they frequently reproduce the provocative language of the claims being examined. By examining the intersection of science journalism and fact-checking, this study contributes to the discourse on fact-checking journalism’s role in public health crises. It also provides a critical evaluation of reporting practices in the Korean media, offering practical recommendations to improve their quality.
