초록

Abstract

The chapter “Pimpinela de Ovando (1912-1951)” from Where the Air Is Clear (1958), is followed by an untitled italicized text on the Spanish Civil War which begins with “The hatchet-face Catalan”. The details included about the mother and her son, the evoked memory, and the dialogue have features that clearly allude to the family of Leon Trotsky’s killer, in the first novel by Carlos Fuentes. Nine months after its publication, the author received a letter from Alfonso Reyes with a harsh judgment on the novel which was titled after a phrase by Reyes himself. In this article, we will review that fragment that heroically exalts the mother in the scene depicted there, as well as the weight of the Reyes’ influence that would have resulted in a change of ideological direction in The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962) where Fuentes again includes a fragment on the Spanish Civil War. The theoretical framework for interpreting this ideological change will be Gilles Lipovetsky proposal on the subjects of the neo-individualist era.
