Abstract

A great deal of work reported that Korean plural marker –tul can be attached to non-nominals such as adverb, verb, quantifier, wh-words etc. The function of this extrinsic plural marking is to distribute the host that –tul is attached to over a plural subject. The present study explored Korean native speakers’ understanding the semantic function of EPM on a verb. Furthermore, it attempted to investigate the scope calculation of EPM on a verb and its influence on the sentence interpretation. To do so, it employed a production task, in which participants were asked to draw a picture for a given target sentence with EPM on a verb. The result showed that Korean native speakers preferred a distributive reading over a collective reading when understanding EPM on a verb. The participants were found to draw a picture in which an entity denoted by a direct object nominal is distributed over each of the agents denoted by a plural subject. It suggested that the scope of EPM on a verb is not restricted to a verb per se but is extended to a direct object nominal, that is, a verb phrase as a whole. In contrast to previous comprehension tasks had found, the current study showed that Korean native speakers have the interpretive preference toward the distributive reading in the production task, which provided compelling evidence that the distributive function of EPM works at Korean native speakers’ sentence interpretation.
