상호텍스트와 상호미디어 변형: 만화와 웹툰의 영화화를 중심으로

본 논문은 예술작품과 콘텐츠의 변형에 관한 문제를 다루었다. 변형의 다양한 유형들이 있고 또한 그것을 지칭하는 많은 용어들이 있지만, 본 연구에서는 그것을 상호텍스트적 변형과 상호미디어적 변형의 두 유형으로 구분하였다. 상호텍스트적 변형이란 1차 텍스트에서 서사형식으로 구현된 의미 부분의 변형을 말한다. 문학작품이 주류영화로 차용되는 많은 사례들이 여기에 속한다. 하지만 텍스트에는 의미를 지시하는 기능을 하는 부분과 함께 의미의 생성이나 소통을 지원하는 미디어의 부분이 있다. 그 부분은 사건과 같은 특징이 있으며 물질성과 같은 실제적인 차원을 말한다. 또한 흥미로운 점은 작품이나 콘텐츠의 텍스트와 미디어는 서로 상호간섭적이어서 하나의 수용은 다른 하나의 인지를 저해한다. 상호텍스트적 변형과는 달리 콘텐츠의 미디어 부분을 변형의 대상으로 하여 다른 미디어에서 그것을 실현하는 경우를 상호미디어적 변형이라고 한다. 상호미디어적 변형을 통해 수용자는 서사의 내용에 몰입하지 않고 그 서사의 성립에 필요한 어떠한 조건과 배경을 이해할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이렇게 구분된 두 가지 유형의 변형에 관한 생각을 만화와 웹툰이 영화화되는 여러 현상들에 적용하여 보았다. 보통의 경우에 영화화된 만화와 웹툰에서 수용자는 1차 텍스트의 의미를 이해하고 그것의 내용에 집중한다. 하지만 변형의 결과물에 미디어의 흔적이 남아있는 경우도 있어서, 미디어가 변형되어 형상화된 사례도 파악할 수 있었다. 반면에 만화와 웹툰의 미디어를 직접적으로 표현한 영화, 즉 상호미디어적 변형의 영화도 몇 가지 사례를 통해 살펴보았다.
Abstract
This paper addresses the meanings and types of artwork or media contents transformation. Being aware of the various terms and concepts such as OSMU, transmedia storytelling or cross media etc., this study attempts to divide it into two major types: intertextual transformation and intermedial transformation. Intertextual transformation is executed in the dimension of the meaning, i.e. semantic isotopy, so that mainly narrative of source texts are transformed into target text. The literary adaptation of the mainstream film is the representative example of this type of transformation. However, text has also a part of media that supports its expression and communication. Media make these happen which results in the a single event which is not able to be duplicated in different time and space. It is also interesting to note that the text and media are mutually interfering with each other, thus concentration on the one hinders recognition of the other. Unlike the intertextual transformation, the case where the media portion of the content is targeted at the variant and realized it on other media can be called intermedial transformation. Through this unique transformation, the recipient can understand under what conditions and backgrounds the narrative is created and accepted without being immersed in the narrative.
