초록
This study attempts to present how Korean plural marking is constrained by animacy constraint through corpus investigation. Based on excerpted texts, it also provides detailed discussions on the sense of Korean plural markers with external functions. In particular, among the data of the distribution of -tul to unorthodox syntactic categories, I will examine whether it triggers a distributive reading in the contexts and if so, what kind of structure features it is involved in (i.e. subject-verb agreement etc.,). To get an estimate of the relative frequency of occurrence of -tul, a search was performed of the Sejong corpus (2003) developed by National Academy of the Korean Language. The study did a concordance analysis on the occurrences of Korean plural marker –tul through corpus investigation and explored the relation between plurality marking and animacy based on texts excerpted from the corpus data. The results revealed that the frequency of –tul in Korean corpus was closely associated with whether its preceding noun is more animate or not, which suggests animacy reflects the human perception and revealed morphological realization. It also showed that the extrinsic –tul on unorthodox categories, in particular verbs, created a distributive reading and was also constrained by the subject-verb agreement. (Tongmyoung University)
