Abstract
This paper researched the peer effects in first year high schools classes at single sex schools. Using a data set from four high schools in Busan, this study identified features of the peer effects by period and gender. This study used a multi-group analysis adopting an autoregressive model. The results revealed two features of the peer effects in the classes. First, the peer effects during the first semester were more evident than in the other periods, summer vacation and the second semester. Second, the male students’ peer effects were more apparent than the females’. These findings can offer homeroom teachers two suggestions about effective classroom management. First, the importance of the first semester in the classroom management. Homeroom teachers who do not create an academic atmosphere in the first semester may be faced with big problems associated with their classroom management in the other periods. Second, the necessity of different classroom management strategies are dependent on the students’ gender. The strategies inducing a cooperative peer effects through large group activities are more desirable in male classroom, whereas the strategies oriented toward affective and small group relationships are needed in female classroom.
