Abstract

Using the Korean Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) 2004 wave, we analyze the peer effects on academic achievement in high school classes. The results from a school fixed effect model show that the peer effects are found among students with comparable academic abilities. The student with the highest score in class has a positive impact mainly on students with SAT scores above the median, while the student with the lowest score in class has a positive impact only on students with SAT scores below the median. This asymmetry of peer effects suggests that grouping students with similar academic achievements is a viable option for maximizing peer effects in high school classes.
