Abstract
This study examined the meaning of emotional geographies, a new perspective to understand place, and conducted campus emotional mapping activities. Emotional geographies represent an effort to understand people’s lives and society in greater depth by paying attention to the interaction of emotions with space and place. The participants in this study reflected on their emotions in various places on the university campus that they experience on a daily basis and visualized them using Google Earth. An iterative content analysis of the participants’ reflective journals resulted in the following themes: a new recognition of their everyday space, the campus as a place from the perspective of humanistic geographers, development of spatial cognition, linkage with secondary education, and educational use of technology. This study adds to the literature in that it expands the perspective of geography education research and activities oriented toward the cognitive domain and presents an empirical case related to emotional geographies and mapping.
