Abstract
This study aimed to explore the changes and influencing factors of out-of-school writing activities through various media for elementary school students. For this purpose, four forms of writing activities were considered: digital(communication : text message, KakaoTalk, SNS), digital(screen: blog), paper, and composite forms. We conducted a latent transition analysis using data from 887 students at 4th and 6th grade in the longitudinal study of ‘Out-of-school literacy activities of elementary school children’. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, out-of-school writing activities in the 4th and 6th grades were commonly categorized into lower, middle, and upper groups. Among the three groups, the lower group had the highest proportion of students across the 4th and 6th grades, followed by the middle group and the upper group. Second, the latent transition of writing activity groups showed that all groups in 4th grade were most likely to move to the lower group and least likely to move to the upper group in 6th grade. Third, we analyzed the factors affecting the change of writing activity groups between 4th and 6th grade, and found that gender, time spent on mobile phones, perception of teacher education, and teacher writing attitudes were the main influencing factors. Finally, the summary and implications of this study are presented.
