Abstract

This study aimed to address students’ errors in decimal addition and the lack of connections between natural and decimal addition by designing and implementing an inquiry lesson on the addition principle that emphasizes the formal aspects of internal connections. The theoretically proposed instructional design was adapted into a lesson plan suitable for the classroom context and applied to elementary students. Data were collected from students’ activities, classroom discourse, and written work, and subsequently analyzed. The results showed that students recognized the common structure of the addition principle across various representations—concrete object, place-value charts, and algorithms—thereby identifying structural similarities. Furthermore, they consistently applied the addition principle across different number domains, namely natural numbers and decimals. Based on these findings, three pedagogical implications were derived: designing teacher prompts that emphasize commonalities, exercising real-time judgment and communication to support the integration of representations, procedures, and meanings, and highlighting meaning-making during representation conversion.
