Abstract
This study investigates the impact of metaverse-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on the development of core competencies in a college English course. A total of 97 students from P University in Busan participated in an eight-week PBL program using the Spot Virtual metaverse platform. Data were collected through pre- and post-course surveys, open-ended written responses, and individual interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and effect sizes (Cohen’s d) with SPSS 29.02, while qualitative data were examined through inductive content analysis. The results indicated significant improvements across all three core competencies: cultural inclusivity (mean increase +.41, d = .54), collaborative communication (+.19, d = .59), and integrative thinking (+.74, d = .71), with the strongest effect observed in integrative thinking. Students enhanced their cultural inclusivity and integrative thinking through exposure to diverse cultural content and team-based activities. The metaverse environment also reduced psychological barriers and encouraged active participation, although improvements in collaborative communication were comparatively modest due to technical limitations and unclear role allocation during group tasks. These findings suggest that metaverse-based PBL is an effective pedagogical strategy for fostering core competencies in general English education, particularly by advancing integrative thinking and cultural inclusivity. To strengthen collaborative communication, structured collaboration strategies and clearer instructional design are recommended. Academically, this study contributes to the growing literature on competency-based English education by demonstrating how immersive environments can complement traditional PBL. Practically, it offers insights for instructors designing metaverse-enhanced courses and highlights the importance of aligning platform affordances with pedagogical goals.
