메타버스(Spot Virtual)를 활용한 미국문화 체험 콘텐츠 제작에 관한 연구

Abstract

This study explores the educational potential of the metaverse in enhancing cultural learning experiences in language education, focusing on its application in an English culture class. Using SPOT Virtual, a metaverse platform, university students in an English culture course designed and created virtual environments representing the unique cultural characteristics, history, and landmarks of U.S. states. The study examines their final virtual spaces and reflective reports to evaluate the impact of the metaverse on cultural understanding, creative thinking, and learning engagement. Data were collected and analyzed through content and thematic analysis, revealing how metaverse-based experiential learning fosters deeper cultural comprehension and active participation. The results indicate that creating virtual environments significantly enhanced students’ motivation, creativity, and self-directed learning skills. Students reported a profound understanding of their chosen states by engaging in research, design, and interactive visualization processes. Additionally, the immersive experience improved memory retention and facilitated the integration of cultural and linguistic knowledge. However, technical limitations of the SPOT platform, including object restrictions and system instability, posed challenges that require future improvement. Based on these findings, this study highlights the metaverse’s potential as an educational tool for integrating language and cultural learning, offering immersive and participatory experiences.
