Abstract
Contrary to the conventional view of the nation-wide integration of financial markets, we find regional segregation of financial markets in Korea. Because of legal restrictions and asymmetries of information in lending markets, funds are imperfectly mobile across regions. Using the annual data for eleven regions during 1985-2001, we find that deposits are positively associated with loans in each region. This suggests that financial markets are locally segregated. Banks have a greater degree of locality than non-bank financial institutions. The degree of regional segregation, however, was found to decrease after the IMF crisis, implying that financial markets are tending to become integrated.
